Premium Pricing Plan
Incremental upgrades have a huge impact on your business over time
AND the ability to charge premium pricing.
It’s half mind-set and half practicality.
How premium is your business right now?
Charging premium pricing isn’t about adding up all your costs and whacking on a profit margin.
The first step is to believe that you deserve it – that you’re worth a higher price than the norm (or
your industry) AND that it’s safe to price yourself out of some people’s budgets (that can feel SO
scary). It’s safe to be expensive.
The second step is to ensure that every part of your business is telling the same story.
Think of the way airlines price their different flight classes. Each change and upgrade is sometimes
subtle (slightly nicer toilet paper) or it’s really obvious (huge flat bed seats).
The price difference can be dramatic between classes, but there’s no accident in how they create
the experience, so that every cue is subtly justifying the price.
There’s a lot of psychology behind this, but let’s start with assessing every part of your customer
Walk through your whole business – regardless of if it’s a physical location or a completely on-line
experience. Assess every single touch point.
Rank each part of your business – is it showing up as economy or first class?
Be objective – and if possible, get someone else to rank it for you.
Remember, you don’t have to change everything overnight. If you upgrade just one or two things a
week, imagine where your business will be in a year.
If your business shows up as the following, choose Economy:
I made it last minute
(and you can tell)
All I could afford
Not what I wanted
Hand me down
Gives me shame
Outdated or generic
Messy or embarrassing
Broken, ripped, stained
Doesn’t quite work anymore
Kind of shitty, old, dirty, etc
I get complaints about it
If your business shows up as the following, choose Premium Class:
Mostly works well
Does the job without fuss
Saves me time or money
Better than what I had
Clients like it
Rarely breaks down
Tiny twinge about investing
Not the worst
New for me
What I (or my clients) need
If your business shows up as the following, choose Business Class:
Clients RAVE about it
Aligned with my values
Makes me feel proud
A good stretch
Saves a lot of time or money
Feels luxurious and convenient
Serves me perfectly
Makes a statement about me…
